The Sundance Ski Resort near Provo, Utah announced on December 11th that it is no longer owned by Robert Redford.  The land was originally purchased in 1968.  He sold the resort to Broadreach Capital Partners and Cedar Capital Partners.  The purchase agreement included keeping 300 acres to be permanently protected from the development of the 2,600 acres.  

The ski resort has four chair lifts and the new owners plan on adding a high-speed lift and enlarging the ski runs.   There are 450 acres of skiable mountain areas.  The base elevation is 6,100 feet and rises to a summit elevation of 8,250 feet.  The average snowfall is 300 inches.  Other plans are to have a lodge and inn with around 75 rooms to accommodate overnight guests.

Enlarging the ski resort will bring more skiers and snowboarders to the resort.  It is the only ski resort in Utah County.  It is roughly one hour from the Salt Lake International Airport to Sundance.  The Sundance Film Festival will continue to keep its viewing building. 

This resort was my first and last ski resort. Sundance Ski School offered discounted lesson packages to the local school children to learn to ski. We rode up on the orange school buses. It is the only ski resort in Utah County and also the most reasonably priced. Back then an all-day ski lift ticket was $15 and now it is $65. That is still a great deal when you compare to Deer Valley at $209 for a weekday day pass. It will be interesting to see how the new owner change the feel and amenities at the resort.
